Chiao-Yi WU

Biographical Profile
Chiao-Yi (Joyce) obtained her B.S. in Psychology with the Dean’s Award and finished the Neurobiology and Cognitive Science Program at the National Taiwan University, Taiwan prior to completing her Ph.D. in Psychology with a research scholarship at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She is interested in studying the neural basis of cognitive functions, in particular language and reading, by employing a variety of neuroscientific methodologies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). During her doctoral studies, she investigated the neural substrates of Chinese character processing and examined language and memory processing in the aging brain using functional MRI.
 
She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Angela D. Friederici at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Germany, to examine the neural basis of language development in preschool children, as well as cross-linguistic comparisons in the neural networks for language building.
 
Now as a Research Scientist at CRADLE@NTU, she aims to apply neuroscientific methodologies to shed light on the neurobiological basis of learning and its implication for education. She is currently involved in the Biliteracy projects and is responsible for the functional MRI studies on reading networks in the bilingual brain for typical and atypical readers.
